Shelter is hosting a panel discussion on “Online Business in the Middle East.” It is happening on September 29th. The event starts at 7pm. Okay. What does this mean to you?

Online business occupies a remarkably small segment of the market in the Middle East. Only 5% of business in the region conduct business transactions online. But things are changing, and they are changing fast. This year, GoNabIt, which was born in Shelter Dubai, was bought out by mega-company Living Social. Online start-ups are experiencing rapid growth as they enter into a market that is wide open to innovation and opportunity.

Entrepreneurs across the region are looking at how to break in to the online business market. By hosting a panel discussion with local entrepreneurs-turned-heavyweights, Shelter is providing a forum for start-ups, small businesses and idea-guys to gain entry into the burgeoning virtual economy in the Middle East.

The panel discussion on Thursday the 29th is an opportunity to hear what Dan Stuart of GoNabIt, Nahrain Jashanmal of Voila Dubai, Omar Kassim of JadoPado, Mike Mansour of Microsoft and Rabea Ataya of Bayt.com have to say about the challenges and opportunities for developing an online business in the Middle East. The discussion will be moderated by Danish Farhan.

Anyone with an interest in the local business market will learn from and enjoy the event. To RSVP on Facebook click here.

Where do women in technology go to geek out? Shelter Dubai on Thursday the night, of course.

This week, Shelter is hosting GeekaFest. That’s GeekFest, with a feminine twist. Featured speakers at the event will be a handful of women who are blazing the way in technology in the Middle East.

Also featured at the event – in addition to all the “usual” GeekFest attractions – will be workshops presented in conjunction with Shelter’s Online Business in the Middle East event. Mita Ray will run a workshop on “PR for start-ups.” PK Gulati will host a workshop on “everything a young start-up needs to know!”

The event runs 7:30pm – 10:30pm

“PR for start-ups” will run 8-8:30pm

“Everything a young start-up needs to know!” will run 9-9:30pm

See you there

The Shelter is open. Where is it?

Take the Manara St. Exit from Sheik Zayed Road. Towards Al Quoz.

Take your first right at the T-intersection. There is a Home Center across the street.

Your goal is the other end of the MMW building. You will see the sign for Al Serkal Avenue on the same building. Do not turn in front of the building: you will turn into a small driveway at the other end.

Go about 100 meters. You will pass a very small signal (it’s for a crosswalk).

The building on your right has a sign that reads “Mapei.” There is a Thrifty sign ahead of  you on the right. Do not go past the Thrifty sign.

10 meters after the signal, turn right. You will be turning onto a stone driveway next to the Mapei building.

You are now in the Al Serkal factory cluster.

The Shelter is in the center of the third warehouse. You can get there by driving in a “U” starting by turning right again around the Mapei building.

Park anywhere.

Work for free.

The new Shelter space in Al Quoz has opened just in time for the end-of-summer business rush. This utilitarian work space is a public venue in which all comers are free to study, innovate, and create. A barn inside a warehouse, we are excited to watch new ideas grow as local professionals use the space for work, meetings, and play.

In the spirit of growing and learning, The Shelter is now playing host to weekly community-centric education events on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Anyone who is interested in bringing an event to The Shelter is encouraged to fill out a request form.

The Last GeekFest Dubai

Well, the last one at the ‘old Shelter’ anyway… Yes! It’s GeekFest time again – next Thursday, the 28th April, at 7.30PM is to be our last, *sob* GeekFest at the place of its birth!

GeekFest Dubai – Goodbye, dear Old Shelter!

We’re bidding a fond farewell to ‘The Old Shelter’, the next GeekFest Dubai will be at the new, painfully funky venue the Shelter team is constructing elsewhere in Al Quoz – we’ll have details of the amazing ‘New Shelter’ to share on the night. Alongside the Shelter Update, GeekFest will feature a mobile applications showcase (well, why not?), some fabby GeekTalks and The Biggest Picture In The World. What more could you possibly want, folks?

GeekFest Mobile

We’re putting on a mobile showcase for app developers: we’ve invited some of the leading mobile applications developers in Dubai to showcase what they’re up to at GeekFest – including ishopaholic, CareZone, and more! They’ll be demoing apps as well as answering questions about platforms, markets, opportunities and whatever else you want to bug them about. !
