On Friday the 2nd of July, we will be putting together Care Packages for the labourers for the camp in Sharjah that was recently featured on the front page of 7Days under the headline “Labourers Left to Starve”. You can find the article here: http://www.7days.ae/storydetails.php?id=95493&page=localnews&title=Labourers%20left%20to%20starve
We will be sorting the items between 10am to 4 pm at Shelter, and volunteers are very welcome. Deadline for dropping donations/supplies to Shelter is Thursday July 1st. Everything collected is going directly to the labourers at the camp in Sharjah of 400 men.
The men say that they hadn’t come here to beg. They’d come here to work hard and to support their families. They hate being in this situation and are deeply depressed. None of the men have been paid for six months, some for seven months and some for as long as an entire year. As they haven’t been paid, they haven’t been able to send anything back home to their families. Two weeks ago, one man’s mother died of starvation. He’s become unhinged. The men say that they can’t digest their food thinking of their starving children back home. The only thing they’ve requested is monetary help so that they have something to take home to their families.
As far as supplies go, clothes (t-shirts, shirts, dhotis), towels, toiletries (soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, prickly heat powder, combs), these things would be of most use.
The aim is to create 400 bundles as consistent as possible to avoid fights breaking out. All donations will be counted up and the total divided equally into 400 envelopes. We’ll leave Shelter once the packages are made and head straight to the camp. Volunteers are welcome to come along for the distribution too. Each man will receive a Care Package and an envelope. InshaÁllah, may we show them that they are not alone and that there ARE people who care.
They’re fine for food and water so no tinned foods required. Also, they have very limited luggage capacity to take stuff back with them so bulky donations such as toys, etc. are not practical to give them.
